A game in which players toss a jackknife in various prescribed ways, with the object being to make the blade stick firmly into the ground.
[From the phrase mumble the peg, from the fact that originally the loser had to pull up with the teeth a peg driven into the ground.]

Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
This one was an audiobook (unabridged). What a great book--I listened to it twice. A deep, rich presentation of sin, grace, and forgiveness, and the "bigness" of the Church behind it all.
Yeah, the humor is more veiled in this one. It is there, though. This was supposedly his "why I am a Catholic / Christian" novel, a means to introduce the Church to a secular readership. He was an adult convert to Catholicism, and the part the Church plays in the novel is great.
I have read "Decline and Fall" by Waugh. It was great. I love his sense of humor. BR needs to be on my list.
