This has been a college football season unlike any other in my days. It seemed there was a legitimate upset every week wreaking havoc on the rankings. It was a thing of beauty. Missouri and, to a lesser extent, West Virginia had an opportunity to give college football something similar to what college basketball gets every spring - a team out of nowhere making a once in a lifetime run at the title. Both teams missed their opportunity. And the BCS ended up being as boring as it ever was.
As a reward for losing to 21 ranked South Florida and 44 ranked Pittsburgh, West Virginia gets to go to a BCS bowl (because they were Big East champs). Meanwhile, Missouri, who only lost to one team all year (losing twice to 4 ranked Oklahoma), and despite beating two of the other BCS bowl teams (Illinois - Rose Bowl, and Kansas - Orange Bowl), and disregarding that Missouri is ranked higher than half of the BCS teams, is relegated to the Cotton Bowl.
Aside from the Rose Bowl and the Auburn-Clemson Bowl I have almost no interest in any of the match-ups. Ohio State vs. LSU is a match-up of a boring team versus a team that should be way better than it is. It will be a snoozer. Hawaii vs. Georgia has minor interest because Hawaii is undefeated and if they beat Georgia soundly (I doubt they will) there are going to be some folks screaming that Hawaii should be number 1 (and how can you argue with them if they beat a team widely regarded as one of the top three teams in college football). Oklahoma vs. West Virginia - meaningless, VT vs. Kansas - why should we care?, Michigan vs. Florida - any other year would be cool match-up but unless Tebow is still hurt Florida should run away with it. I guess I do have some interest in the Cotton Bowl. Even though Arkansas is ranked 27 their match-up with Missouri pits the two Heisman runners-up against each other. And a Missouri victory over the team that beat likely BCS champs, LSU, would be a small consolation for them. So that makes 3 watchable bowls out of 32, that is way better than a playoff system, great work college football.
If folks were trying to pick the least inspiring match-ups they could their list would look a lot like what we've got. Here are two professionals griping about it (Wojciechowski, and Mandel) and links to Adair's blog, and Anthony's blog where some venting is going on.

yeah, once again the BCS is a joke.
I blame the SJC report.
Auburn v Clemson? I like it!
I think the SEC got some pretty good games out of the deal. Should make us look pretty good. But ESPN won't give us any credit for destroying Ohio State and Hawaii and Michigan.
Arkansas and Missouri? I like it too!
Missouri and Arkansas should at least be an offensive game. Arkansas won't be able to handle Missouri's spread line, and Missouri won't be able to contain McFadden.
